
Apple has announced the iPhone 5, the world’s thinnest smartphone.

- Pre-orders start September 14th - Shipping on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
- It features a 326ppi Retina display, 4-inches, and a 1136 x 640 resolution - same width as iPhone 4S, only taller.
- A6 chip - 2X faster CPU and 2x graphics compared to the A5.
- Same price as the iPhone 4S: $199 for 16GB. $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB – on-contract pricing.
- Two colors: white and black - The white version has a raw aluminum back. The black one has the black anodized backing.
- US carriers: AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will all support true 4G connectivity, as well as Canada’s Rogers, Telus and Bell. Europe carriers: EE and Deutsch Telekom will gain LTE. Asia: KDDI, Softbank, KT, SK Telecom and SmartTone.
- Connector: Lightning - You can plug it in either way, it’s all digital, 80% smaller. “It’s a huge difference in the world’s thinnest smartphone.”
- iSight – Eight megapixel, 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens and f/2.4 aperture. It’s the same as the iPhone 4S but thinner - The front-facing camera is now 720p, backside illuminated.
- Three microphones.
- Panorama mode - You sweep the scene vertically to get the most resolution, then just swing your phone - 28 megapixel resulting image is the result.
- New image processor in the A6 to reduce noise and includes a ”smart filter” to perform better at color-matching.
- Battery life: “What [our team] has done is not only match but exceed the battery life of the iPhone 4S.” - 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing. 10 hours on WiFi browsing.
- “Ultimate racing experience on iOS” announced as it’s Real Racing 3 – coming from EA.
- 44% better color saturation, full SRGB rendering.
- “Ultrafast Wireless” – 4G LTE - GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE!
- Pixel-perfect rendering.
- It has five rows of icons, plus the four shortcuts on the bottom.
- It’s the world’s thinnest smartphone, says Phil. Weighs 112 grams. 20% lighter than the 4S.
- Thinnest and lightest iPhone yet. 7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than before.
