Those who went to New York’s 5th Avenue flagship Apple Store may have seen a few NYPD officers lurking around. Their presence was due to the fact of letting new iPhone 5 owners register their latest purchases with them in order to help them retrieve their smartphone if it ever was stolen or misplaced.
Officers are also suggesting the engraving of a unique I.D. number right onto the device will also aid in getting stolen devices back to the right people, while also reducing the resale value of the hardware in question. Not many people will buy a stolen iPhone if it’s been branded in such a way, the NYPD notes.
Find My iPhone is another app that has proven to be popular and success with iPhone owners retrieving their devices after it went missing.
