Leaked images show the iPhone 5′s new Nano Sim holder side-by-side with the Micro Sim holder used by the iPhone 4S, revealing a smaller and thinner design.
The images, originally posted by Nowhereelse.fr , show a difference of millimeters between Apple’s new Nano Sim and the currently used Micro Sim. The change in size, approximated at one-thirds smaller, seems small, but could mean big things for the next iPhone. The component that houses the Nano Sim takes 40% less space than previous designs, according to Apple Insider, allowing more space for other components and a thinner overall design.
Apple has been pretty public about its intention to use the Nano Sim design; submitting the design approval to ETSI back in the spring showed proof that Apple was looking to make their standard Sim design smaller. While nothing we see before the launch of the iPhone can be taken as final, the hardware we’re seeing here is pretty convincing. In one month we’ll see what this small change could mean for the rest of the iPhone 5.
